Supported Dutch millionaire named Stanley Ogosta Mizegas (Stanley August Miesegaes), singer, keyboardist and former drummer for Rick Davis with ads in the newspaper Melody Maker gathered for the first group in August 1969. It included a singer, guitarist and keyboardist Roger Hodgson, guitarist and singer, Richard Palmer and Robert Millar (percussion, harmonica). Initially, Roger Hodgson sang and played bass guitar (and also on guitar, cello and flute). The group was called Daddy from August 1969 to January 1970, after which the name was changed to Supertramp, which was taken from the book by William Henry Davies «The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp», published in 1908. They were one of the first groups signed by the British branch of the A & M Records. The first album, Supertramp, was released on July 14, 1970 in the UK and Canada (officially released in the U.S. only in 1977). The album is not popular, and few critics have paid attention to their first job. Dave Winthrop (Dave Winthrop, saxophone, flute) joined the band after the release of the first plate and Supertramp was able to perform at the festival on the Isle of Wight (Isle Of Wight Festival) in 1970. Six months later left the team, Richard Palmer, Robert Millar suffered a nervous breakdown. The next album, Indelibly Stamped, released in June 1971 (in the UK and USA), Frank Farrell (Frank Farrell, bass) and Kevin Curry (Kevin Currie, percussion) replaced Millar and Palmer, Roger Hodgson also switched to guitar. Hodgson suggested that the group should have two vocalists and Rick Davis began to sing the vocals, along with Hodgson. The album featured a bit more commercial approach, catchy cover. Despite this, sales have not improved, in fact, the album sold worse than the debut. In early 1972, the group lost its financial support in the face of Mizegasa. Gradually, the group had left everything except Hodgson and Davies. Later, during the peak of popularity, these two albums were reissued, which was gladly welcomed by old fans of the group. The first album has little to do with the future hits of differing lyrical and melancholy. The second album is often possible to hear the makings of a future of popular tunes, the band's sound is heard brand. first success and a commercial break at the end of 1972, persuaded to continue, Davies and Hodgson began searching for replacement of retired musicians, which resulted in their group Dougie Thomson (Dougie Thomson, bass guitar), who played in a band for almost a year before the audition continued. In 1973 the group appeared Zibenberg Bob (Bob Siebenberg, drums and John Hellivell (John Helliwell, sax, clarinet, keyboards, backing vocals). This group is considered a classic. Hodgson frequently has to use an acoustic guitar and electric piano in his own compositions. The classical piano group - Wurlitzer Electric Piano (Model 200A), with its easy-to-distinguishable bright sound and biting distortion. Lost single, «Land Ho», was the first record of new Supertramp. He was not on the album, «Crime of the Century», and never published in its original form. Crime of the Century, released in September 1974 marked the beginning of the group's success, both commercially and with critics. album reached number four in Britain with the help of countercultural opening song «School», and single «Dreamer», got into the top 10. other party has given the single «Bloody Well Right», has earned a place in the American Top 40 in May 1975, hitting a 35 place. Zibenberg called this album a peak of creativity Supertramp, despite the fact that the larger commercial success came later. Group continued the album Crisis? What Crisis?, released in November 1975. He was well received, although it has not received overwhelming commercial success. followed it, Even in the Quietest Moments, released in April 1977 gave a hit single Give a Little Bit (# 15 U.S.), and popular on the radio, Fool's Overture. During this period, the band changed their place of residence in the United States and gradually moved away from prog-rock roots, to the more pop-rock sound. greatest commercial success brought the albumBreakfast in America, which appeared in the March 1979 incident on the third place in the British charts and the first in the U.S.. With him were successful singles - «The Logical Song» (# 6 in U.S.), «Take the Long Way Home »(# 10 in the U.S.),« Goodbye Stranger »(# 15 U.S.) and" Breakfast in America ". Worldwide has sold more than 18 million copies of this album. In the wake of the success of the band released a double album in concert, 1980 Paris. Instead of focusing on the incredibly popular Breakfast in America, the album included most of the Crime of the Century, again emphasizing how important this album was in the development of the group. Initially, it was assumed that the record will be made in Quebec City, Canada, but A & M has decided that it should be a "more mainstream city." In addition, in 1980 the composition «Dreamer» was finally released on single in the U.S., where fell to 15th place. After the success Despite the fact that the authorship of the songs credited as Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, both wrote separately. vocal and compositional features of preferences and style of Hodgson and Davies large difference, added the album needed paint. feature of the group was the contrast between a few close to the blues theme and styling Davies, supported by its unusual , husky tenor («Another Man's Woman», «From Now On», «Goodbye Stranger»), and thoughtful observations and reflections Hodgson, underlines its easily-distinguishable high voice («Dreamer», «School», «Fool's Overture», « The Logical Song »). Hodgson left the band after the tour for the next album, titled ... Famous Last Words ... (1982), the list of tracks that were listed« It's Raining Again »(Top 20) and« My Kind of Lady ». (Top 40). In an interview in the 90's Hodgson stated that family was the main reason for his departure from the group. He also noted that at the time of his leaving his wife and the wife of Davis did not get along, and it grew into a major conflict in the group. Moreover, Hodgson said that there were no personal or professional problems between him and Davis was not. After leaving the band in 1983, Hodgson began a solo career. His biggest hit was the song «Had A Dream (Sleeping With the Enemy) "the first solo album, In the Eye of the Storm , dated 1984 year. Group, led by Davis released a new album titled Brother Where You Bound in 1985. Composition «Cannonball» hit the Top 30, and the title track was a 16 - minute epic on the theme of the Cold War, decorated with guitar solos of David Gilmour. album climbed to number 21 in the American charts. In 1987 was born Free As A Bird, consisting of a simple, classic rock to Davis, including «I'm Beggin 'You », got on top of the American dance charts, which was an unusual achievement for a proc-rock group. After the tour in 1988, Thompson left the band because of disagreements with Davis about the tunes composed by Hodgson in concert Supertramp. One conditions which enabled Davis to keep the band name was a refusal to perform the songs Hodgson in concert. Hodgson himself was shocked to learn that the band still plays his hits such as as «Take the Long Way Home» and «The Logical Song.», where his party sang, Mark Hart (Mark Hart) of Crowded House. When the group was united in 1996, Thomson declined an invitation to return. April 14, 1993 Davis, Hodgson and Hellivell gathered at the dinner dedicated to the retirement of one of the founders of A & M Jerry Moss (Jerry Moss). After that, Davis and Hodgson again began to work together, but gradually Hodgson left the project. In his interview, he stated that the main reason for his reluctance to return to Supertramp was the wife of Davis, Susan, intervening in the affairs of the group. Susan was in the Department of to work with musicians in the A & M and helped them to move to Los Angeles in the mid 70s. Soon they began the novel, and she left his post at A & M, became manager of the group. Davis refused to remove his wife from the affairs of the group and has since Hodgson and Davis were not working together. In 1996, Davis assembled Supertramp with former members Hellivellom, Zibenbergom and Hart, adding several new artists. fruit of the work was the album Some Things Never Change, released in March 1997. In the same year saw the light and Rites of Passage, Hodgson's first solo album since Hai Hai in 1987. It was a live album, which included, as new works by Hodgson and old hits - «Take the Long Way Home», «The Logical Song» and «Give a Little Bit» . Two years later, an updated Supertramp released a new live album, It Was The Best Of Times, while Roger gave the world a new studio - Open The Door. Another live album, Is Everybody Listening?, Supertramp record at Royal Albert Hall in 1975, was published in 2001. In early 2002, released another album of Davis and a group called Slow Motion. Another attempt to combine the group with Hodgson turned out a failure in 2005.
